How to Make Amends for Wartime Transgressions

Grades: 9-12 Time: 1 hour Description This is a guide for your students to learn what reparation is as well as a discussion on how to make up for past wrongdoings. It explores the concept of who is responsible for wartime atrocities that are decades old after the event is over. For this particular lesson plan, we used the victims of germ warfare from Unit 731 as an example. Essential Question What kinds of reparations are necessary for victims of wartime atrocities? Engage How do you make up for past wrongdoings? Explore Consider how reparations would help these victims. Explain Students share their ideas for offering reparations to the victims. Elaborate Obstacles in the way of reparations for the victims: the Japanese government unwilling to accept guilt. Evaluate Students consider other kinds of reparations possible for the victims. |
