HISTORY OF THE RISING SUN FLAG

What is the Rising Sun Flag?

Symbol of a rising sun
It is a flag that was adopted by Japan in the 1870s. It depicts a red circle surrounded by sixteen rays on a white background.

Where did the Rising Sun Flag come from?

There are 2 theories:
In 607 A.D., the Emperor of Japan sent a diplomatic envoy to Sui Dynasty China where he sent a letter addressed to the country addressed to the sovereign of the “land where the sun sets (sun-set country),” from the sovereign of the “land where the sun rises (sun-rise country),” referring to Japan’s geographic location relative to China.

It is meant to resemble a chrysanthemum, a symbol of the Emperor and the Imperial Family of Japan.

Rising Sun: The Innocent Fascist Symbol

The flag of the Rising Sun was first originally used throughout feudal Japan and during the Meiji Reformation officially became a battle flag for the new imperial military.

During the Second World War and well before, the Empire of Japan used the Rising Sun flag for not just state use or functions but also naval jacks and army banners, cementing its image as a symbol for an aggressive and imperialist Japan.

To many throughout the Asian continent, the Rising Sun symbolizes hostility and serving unwillingly to an empire. To many, it also brings images of comfort women, the Rape of Nanking, and the brutality of a warmongering military.
