Lesson Plan: Biochemical Warfare Development

Grades: 9-12 Time: 1 hour Description In this lesson plans students will gain background knowledge on the development of biochemical warfare and the Geneva Protocol, as well as be able to compare and contrast world events surrounding biochemical warfare. Information on the development of biochemical warfare can be found at Pacific Atrocities Education or in the book Unit 731- The Forgotten Asian Auschwitz. Information on the Geneva Protocol can be found through the U.S. Department of State. This lesson plan is structured around the “5 E Method”: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. Engage Students will watch the background video and answer the guiding questions. Explore Students will split into groups, and use the information from The U.S. Department of State to explore the guidelines of the Geneva Protocol. Explain Students will participate in a class discussion on what they learned in their small groups. Elaborate Have students consider some of the similarities between instances where biochemical weapons have been used. Is there any justification for not complying with the Geneva Protocol? Evaluate Students will use reflectives to consider the impacts of the use of biochemical weapons. |
