Fall of the Qing Dynasty
The Qing dynasty, which had ruled China for over two centuries, began to decline in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Internally, the government was weakened by corruption and peasant uprisings, such as the Taiping Rebellion. Externally, China faced pressures from colonial powers seeking trade concessions. By the early 1900s, revolutionary fervor grew among intellectuals and reformers who believed that a constitutional republic or a modernized system would save China from foreign domination. This unrest culminated in the 1911 Revolution (also called the Xinhai Revolution), toppling the Qing and ending 2,000 years of imperial rule. The new Republic of China, founded in 1912, proved fragile as it struggled with warlordism and factionalism.
The political vacuum led to rifts within the Revolutionary Alliance that Sun Yat‑Sen had organized. After Sun’s death in 1925, Chiang Kai-shek emerged as a key leader of the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang), while Mao Zedong led the rising Communist Party. The two factions clashed in a prolonged civil war beginning in the late 1920s. This internal turmoil diverted resources and left China vulnerable. The imperial ambitions of Japan filled this void, particularly after it secured an initial foothold in Manchuria by the early 1930s. The fall of the Qing thus set the stage for an era of upheaval, intensified by foreign encroachments and the looming conflicts that would soon erupt into the Sino‑Japanese War and, more broadly, World War II.

Creation of Manchukuo
While Chinese forces were fragmented by the civil war, Japan seized Manchuria, citing the Mukden Incident of 1931 as its pretext. Manchuria was strategically valuable due to its abundant resources—coal, iron, and rich farmland—as well as its existing railway networks. The Japanese established the puppet state Manchukuo in 1932, installing the deposed Qing emperor Puyi as the nominal head. Although it was presented as an independent entity, Manchukuo was firmly controlled by the Imperial Japanese Army, which had a significant presence in the area.
Manchukuo became a testing ground for new weapons and strategies. The infamous Unit 731, for instance, conducted chemical and biological warfare experiments on prisoners and local populations, exemplifying the brutality the Japanese would bring to subsequent campaigns. Despite its propaganda claims of being a multi‑ethnic Asian state free from Western dominance, Manchukuo was rejected by the League of Nations and widely seen as a clear symbol of Japan’s aggressive expansionist policy.
