End of the War
Despite initial military successes, Japan’s ambitions overextended. By 1944–45, the tide had turned, especially as American and Allied forces made gains in the Pacific. Chinese armies, though battered, continued to resist, and internal networks of intelligence undermined Japanese control. The Soviet invasion of Manchuria in August 1945 hastened the collapse of Japanese occupation on the mainland. Then, with the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan announced its surrender on August 15, 1945. The formal signing took place on September 2 aboard the USS Missouri, officially ending World War II.
Shanghai, including the International Settlement, was returned to Chinese administration. Refugees and citizens tried to rebuild amid devastation and political shifts. The city remained significant in global affairs even after the war, gradually becoming a focal point in subsequent Cold War maneuverings. Although overshadowed by later upheavals—such as the Chinese Communist victory in 1949—the scars of occupation and war in Shanghai left a deep, indelible mark on its populace.
